Depth of Field is the zone of acceptable sharpness within a photo that will appear in focus. In every picture there is a certain area of your image in front of, and behind the subject that will appear in focus. Having a shallow depth of field would mean having the subject of the photo in focus and the rest of the image blurry. Having a deep depth of field would mean having everything in focus and having none of the image blurry.
